Graham Farquharson was President and Founder of Strathcona Mineral Services Ltd, a Director of Franco-Nevada Corporation, Cambior Inc., and Placer Dome Inc., in addition to many other Canadian mining companies. He attained a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering from the University of Alberta, a Master of Business Administration from Queen’s University, and received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of New Brunswick. He had a successful 61 year career in the mining industry including the development of Nanisivik on northern Baffin Island, the first mine in the Canadian High Arctic. Graham was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Order of Canada in 2021. Graham was a philanthropist and made many contributions to great causes including dedicating over 25 years supporting university students considering a career in the mining industry through his leadership as Chairman and primary supporter of the Canadian Mineral Industry Education Foundation.

The award is presented to an outstanding undergraduate student in their final year in Mining Engineering, Geology or Metallurgy from any university across Canada.

Recipients receive $5,000 upon graduation (normally in their 4th year of their degree program) if the following requirements have been met.

Recipients of the award must have:

  • Outstanding Academic Performance: Maintained above average academic performance throughout their degree, ranking in the first quartile of their graduation class.
  • Lead or Participated in Research or Projects: Involvement in significant research, projects or engineering work related to mining.
  • Industry Experience: Has obtained relevant, practical work experience in the mining industry between academic terms and/or during the terms through internships, Co-op programs or summer work in the mining industry. This could include full-time employment secured in the mining industry post graduation.
  • Demonstrated Leadership: Involvement in student organizations, clubs or professional societies related to mining.
  • Involvement in Community and/or Charitable Organizations: Participation in charitable/non-profit, community service or outreach activities, particularly those related to engineering or mining.
  • Proven Passion in Field of Study: A strong demonstrated interest and passion for the future of mining (environmental interests, sustainability etc.)
  • Participation in Extra-curricular Activities: Is passionate and active in social activities such as sports, hobbies, mental health, physical wellness, etc.
